DNS stands for Domain Name System. The main function of DNS is to translate domain names into IP Addresses, which computers can understand. It also provides a list of mail servers that accept Emails for each domain name. Each domain name in DNS will nominate a set of name servers to be authoritative for its DNS records.

What is the role of DNS on the Internet?

It is an important tool that requires to be fool-proof and has a major role in browsing the Internet.  Domain names serve to identify Internet resources, such as computers, networks, and services, with a text-based label that is easier to memorize than the numerical addresses used in Internet protocols. A domain name may represent entire collections of such resources or individual instances.
